Discussion:
Starter removal

Hey,
Trying to remove the starter from a Caterpillar T40DSA coming from the topside. I've managed to get down to the Starter but there are Hydraulic hoses in the way of one of the bolts and it seems the exhaust manifold is blocking it from being removed in the first place. I've searched to try to find the proper way to remove it and have had no luck. Any thoughts anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure what hoses those are, probably for the tilt or side shifter. Those would be the smaller diameter hoses. Make sure the forks are down all the way before you disconnect any. You won't have to bleed anything after connecting them back up, just cycle the tilt and side shifter back and forth a couple times after you get it running and the air will come out on it's own. If it is a big hose that has to come off there still shouldn't be any problem.

I've never done much work around hydraulic hoses. What's the easiest way to deal with them? I understand labeling them to see where they reconnect too but the fluid that drains out will leave air in the lines and I've never bled anything larger then a brake line for a car.

If I can remember right, jack and block the truck up in the air. Unhook the hoses, remove bolts, lower starter down and out the bottom.
