Hyster S50XL:
Stalling and rough idle

Hello,

New member here! After searching for a solution online I have come up empty handed.

I have a 1980's S50xl Hyster and it was running fine up until a few days ago. Now it has hard starting and stalls seconds after starting. Full tank & battery.

Got the unit last year, changed the oil & plugs. I use it maybe 2hrs/month. Sits outside occasionally (sometimes in the rain). I am in upstate NY so temperatures fluctuate quite a bit.

Checked and noticed the belts are a little loose (I can rotate the fan and alternator by hand with some force). If I have to tighten them, how do I do this (very tight access)?

Anything else I need to check?

Thanks in advance for any wisdom offered.

the reason I ask about the external resistor has to do with your symptom of shutting off after starting, which may mean the coil itself (not the resistor) is not getting power when the key is allowed to return to in the "run" position. if the resistor or related wiring is bad, this can happen.
First thing is a good tuneup and dry inside the distributor cap, then have you tried to jump a wire from battery positive to the + side of the coil and see if it runs then?

By hard starting I mean it turns over at normal rate but does not fire so easily. Maybe the ignition got wet?

This lift has an external resistor.

a serial number is almost always a good thing to include, so we can be sure we are talking about the same units.
when you say "hard starting" please go into that description a nit more, does the starter seem to turn the engine slow? does the engine turn at a normally fast rate with the starter but never sees fire in the cylinder?
does this unit have an external resistor to the coil?
