Discussion:
Rough idle/sometimes dies on decel

Hoping I can find someone who has run across this problem before. I have a Fortis Hyster H50FT L177B18683E with a 2.2L Mazda LPG engine. This lift has a problem that, one has been difficult to catch, and two is not very consistent. The customer called and said the unit was running rough and would die when he drove it across his warehouse floor and let up on it. When I got there the unit ran perfectly! No issues, no error codes, nothing. I ran the unit for about an hour and it was running perfectly. I left that night and decided to come back in the morning, maybe when it was cold it acted up. Got there in the morning and it started right up, ran great for about 20 minutes then when I let off the gas pedal it died. Tried to start it and it started right back up and ran fine again. This same scenario happened about 4 more times off and on. No dash codes and it happens so quickly and fixes its self so quickly I couldn't test any components. I since have picked the unit up and brought it to our shop it has been two weeks now, starting and running it every day and it may act up once every other day or every third day. It will rarely but sometimes does sputter upon start up but comes out of it right away. We have tuned the unit up, replaced the fuel regulator, ran a new fuel line from the tank coupler straight to the LP regulator, cleaned the grounds on the truck, but it still will act up from time to time. Anyone have any ideas? Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the update. Glad you got it fixed. I will log this one into my memory for the future too.

There is nothing that can't be fixed...
Hey IndyHysterGuy...Sorry for the late response. I did finally get this unit figured out. The diaphragm in the fuel mixer has a like plastic material inside the part that glides on the center post on the mixer. The mixer center post also has a plastic guide on it. There were contaminants on the two plastic parts which would prevent smooth operation between them from time to time. This is what was causing the sporadic issue. I removed the top of the mixer (I know it says its a non-serviceable item) and replaced the diaphragm, cleaned the center post inside the carb with some brake cleaner and a Q tip and reassembled it. So far the unit runs great! I am certain this problem will not soon leave my memory. I just hope it helps someone down the road.

Hi Gump,

Perhaps you have it fixed by now. I would be interested in the solution if you have. At any rate... I had a Yale from the same era with a Mazda 2.2 do exactly the same thing to me last year. I also tried a variety of things. Basically everything you did. I had also replaced the fuel lock off as they had the old design with the pigtail which can cause the engine to die when you manipulate the wiring harness. (The new design comes with a wiring harness that plugs right into the body of the lockoff. P/N: 4043883) We brought it into the shop and put our heads together and using the fuel system software determined that the MAP sensor was intermittent. Part number: 1548352 if you feel like checking to see for yourself.

Best of luck!
