Sometimes people's egos/pride get in the way of good common sense. The head guy may view what you did as a sign of weakness of his company as they had to go to the outside for help or some one (maybe your direct boss)in the company may have felt you went around the organization and complained to the big boss.
You just need to be aware of things like that - your mission was correct take care of the customer first - w/o customers it is hard to pay the bills..
