I'm assuming it a burn on battery strap then and not a bolt on one?
Welded battery straps, unless you have the proper tool to grab a thimble DO NOT CUT THE STRAP ON THE CELL YOU WANNA TAKE OUT!!
I just usually use a post drill and drill off the welded strap on the cell next to the one your taking out, bend up the welded strap then do the same again on the other side of the cell, now your left with your faulty cell you wanna lift out with two welded on straps still welded to it with holes in where you've just ran your post drill through. Get something non-conductive to fit nicely inside the two drilled out holes on the straps, I've got piece of hard plastic bar about 5" long by about 5/8th thick, get a small block n tackle if it's a stubborn little fella and attach it to your overhead guard and the other end onto your cell, yeh-ho, once it moves it'll be a breeze.
Bolt to bolt ones, simple. Run an 10mm lifting eye into each post and repeat as above, couldn't be easier.
Oh, and if your gonna weld on a new strap make sure the battery is well vented, that it hasn't been on charge recently and just start of with maybe 4-6volts then work your way up to 8 volts if your carbon rod isn't getting hot enough - easy!!
