You don't need to remove counterweight to lift out steer motor or hydraulic motor, it is quite fiddly but the do come out.

I never remove them to do brushes, just simply unscrew the two bolts that hold the top hat of the motor on, remove field wires and spin the top hat around so you can access the difficult brushes then spin it back and refit cables.
