does the engine sound ok when starting? or does it sound unusually erratic while turning over?
i would check the timing and timing belt and gears
get #1 cyl up on TDC and check the timing marks on the crank and cam gear and make sure they line up. it could have jumped a tooth or two.
If this is an F2 or FE engine the top cover is easy to remove and check, the bottom part is not so easy to remove but you may have to just to check the lower half.
