Hyster E50Z:
Premature Hydraulic Pump Motor Failures

I have a customer with a fleet of Hyster E50Z-33 (G108) forklifts. All of these lifts are AC drive but DC hydraulic motor. The fleet is getting old and tired (20,000+ hrs). Over the last year or two they have been going through a lot of hydraulic pump motors. The operators are terrible at not locking out the units when the brush wear indicator code comes on the dash, which doesn't help. I have gotten a few of these motors rebuilt locally with relatively poor results, reman motors have held up better. The motor failures are always the same, brushes worn down to nothing and burn up the commutator. Anybody got any ideas for anything I might be missing that could be causing this?

It's a long shot but you might want to make sure the brushes and springs are not out of spec aftermarket parts. Get the OEM parts from Hyster and make sure springs get replaced even if they look good.

Also, make sure the Hyster dealer isn't getting aftermarket parts. In the old days some Parts guys would make a few extra bucks that way.

I don't think your missing much sounds like you have figured it out.
older fleet / high hours and the usual operators who don't either care or have not been educated lol.

If MIL lamp for low brushes is working correctly on the units then the employees are not doing their job reporting defects or as you said locking them out. This is entirely out of your hands. Management has a responsibility to identify high cost areas of maintenance within its operation and take action amending procedures or disciplining operators and holding employees accountable who don't follow them resulting in equipment damage.
