hey guys
i have a cat c5000, it will crank over no problem and try to start before almost turning back on its self. odd part is if you choke the intake manually then it will fire and run great. I have spark, i have fuel and the fuel solenoids appear to be working good, the though that choking it will lead to it starting is sending me to believe i don't have enough fuel going through the intake. has anyone run across this? again it runs like a top once started, idles good and revs beautifully. but no codes and im not here to throw parts at it till it works so anyone who has seen this let me know. also fuel pressure sensor is reading in range.

Did you use OEM CAT cam and crank sensors or aftermarket??? These engines dont do well with aftermarket sensors or aftermarket sparkplugs either....
It sounds like you may need to check your valve adjustment. The valves get tight over time and will cause a hard start. The choking the engine is a good indication. Check you compression too.
Also when you pull the coil packs the the exact time when it tries to run happens to also be the exact time there is spark then for three or four revolutions there's no spark and the truck does nothing then again spark spark spark then nothing
Okay so a bit of a update, thought we had narrowed it down to the crank shaft position sensor took a gamble and were fully wrong. So as it sits the truck has a new crank and cam sensor and we have installed a new reg as the one that it came into the shop with had a blow diaphragm and we have had zero luck with rebuilding these. So basically I'm still in the same boat. Is there anyone who has run across this or who works for a cat dealer who can offer some advise other then call the dealer, tried that said they do t know.
you might want to check the injector filter and see if it's clogged up.
depending on which year it was built there are a couple of injector body's it might have.
that injector filter is located underneath a small plate or sensor on top of the injector body or inside the inlet hose elbow.
just remove the 2 screws holding the cover, sensor or elbow and look inside and there should be a small 10 micron screen filter inside held with a clip.
the manual recommends replacing it but you can try to clean it and see if that makes any difference in starting.
also you can remove the drain plug on the vaporizer and see if it has any oil in it and clean that out.
If all of the above fails to help the starting you may be looking at a bad injector.
it is highly unusual that it is not coding out since these trucks are fairly sensitive and code out with any irregular pressure or fuel delivery issue.
First and simplest check to do is make sure tank has fuel in it and that the tank coupler is tight...also make sure that the tank couplermis fully seated, have seen alot of times after a tank change, the one oring gets caught in the coupler then transfers to new tank, now there is two flat orings and couple dosent seat correctly, causing a no start, low fule condition.....also make aure tank is oriented right in its cradle and that the valve is opened fully....
