The school I work for just received a older Yale forklift that runs very well for free. It does need some work however. I plan to use it as a class project and fix it up. However the i.d. tag is missing and I'd like to figure what exact model it is. After reading through these forums and comparing to pics on the web it looks like a L51C. However, it has a floor shift and the pics I saw on the internet are column shifts. Ours looks like it was originally a gas and someone converted it to LPG. It has a 4cyl flathead engine with a distributor in the center of the head.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'm just a little concerned about finding parts with the age of the machine. The reason it was given to us is that someone put the wrong steering gearbox (I guess) in it and now it steers in the opposite direction that it should. i.e. When you steer right it turns left and vise versa. I'm hoping fixing that doesn't end up costing way more than the entire machine is worth. Otherwise it is not a bad little unit that fits our needs perfectly at school.
Some parts are available. Not sure if brake parts are still available. The older trucks usually had heavy webs, you can have them relined. seals and bearings can be locally matched in most cases. The tilt cylinders probably need to be resealed. If you have a good local hydraulic supplier they can match the seals.
Thanks for the info! I'll see about finding the serial number. Before we stick money into fixing it can anyone tell me if parts are readily available for this model? It runs excellent but it needs brake work and the tilt drifts real bad. I'm guessing the drift is due to something in the hyd. control unit as the rams are not leaking. Thanks!
Sounds like a G51C. The early models had a floor shift manual transmission. The serial number should be stamped in the frame. I cannot remember where they stamped this model.
