Discussion:
MPB tiller card

Hey everyone,

I have a MPB-en B827 with an H year code.
Suspect the tiller card is either bad or needs to be calibrated but every book I have shows the calibration jumper as 3 pins. I have an 8 pin jumper and a single digit display on the tiller card itself.

Anyone have any info on this setup?

Thanks
Justin

Thanks for the info justinm. Going to print the instructions out and add it to my troubleshooting list.

Yup sleepy, that was the issue. Still had to find the calibration procedure for the new card though.

Found the calibration procedure in the MPE (A896) book. Apparently there's two types. Old and new style. The old style has the 3 pin jumper. The new style has the 4 position jumper and the single digit readout. I have the new style.

First, split the head., you have to see the tiller card to do this.

With the key off move the jumper from P (park) to T (train/calibrate). Turn it on and there should be a dash in the middle of the display. twist fully forks direction and press lift on the left side. the display changes. twist fully operator's direction and press the lower button on the left side. it changes again. Release the handle and move the jumper from T back to P. A dot should appear in the display to confirm the calibration is saved. Cycle the key and you're ready to go.

My card came set for an MPE. There's a setting for that too. The new card said "7" and the old one said "3" in the display. Key off, move jumper from P to C. Use the horn button to change the value. There's like 15 of them. Press the emergency rev to save it and the dot appears. It helps to take the belly button bumper (red button) off the head since it forces the horn down when the head is loose. Helps to leave it off and put it on AFTER the head is resembled.

I might be way off base here but I've run into the problem where the unit will creep on its own. I've found that the plastic twist connection on the card in the tiller breaks and doesn't always return to neutral. It's the plastic piece on the card that the square rod from the thumb levers goes through. There are two or three fingers in there and one breaks. Clear as mud?

The machine is working right except that sometimes it will creep in reverse (forks direction) on its own. Barely twisting it back the other way stops it. I wanted to try recalibrating it but I don't have the procedure for this card (or a good description). All the markings are covered with a thick grey rubber insulation. I carefully scraped some away and the jumpers looked like they were marked: P|T|D|C (if I remember correctly). I have a new one in my van (from my stock) but it's kinda useless since I can't calibrate that one either. Yup, I tried lol.

Fact of the week
The origin of "love" as the score zero in tennis is debated, but two main theories prevail. One suggests it's derived from the French word "l'oeuf" (egg) which resembles the shape of the number zero. The other proposes it's related to the Dutch word "lof" meaning "honour" as players might be playing for honour when scoreless.
