Discussion:
Help Identifying Transmission for Troubleshooting.

Hi. I recently purchased a late 60's(?) AC FTB 30-24. After rebuilding the steering box, it is a really nice running lift. However, only the low transmission gear is working. When I push the shift lever down (Hi) and shift (both forward and reverse), the forklift acts as if it is in neutral. Note that forward and reverse both work great in the low range.

I would like to start looking into this problem, but have not been able to identify the transmission manufacturer & model number. The schematics I have seen have an inching control valve setup on the top. Mine does not appear to have that. On mine, there are 2 connections going into the front of the transmission - one (upper) for Forward/reverse and the other (lower) for High/Low.

I will see if I can figure out how to post pictures on here for reference.

Model: Allis Chalmers FTB 30-24
Type: G
Serial #: 64014
Engine: Waukesha fc 133

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
-jeff.

Thanks for the replies. I will start with opening up the top as suggested, and see if I can identify the defective part/linkage/etc. If it's anything serious, I will just continue using it in low while I look for parts or complete replacement. This lift really doesn't see enough action to make much of a difference - I just prefer to have everything functioning as intended.

Does anyone know who might have made this transmission for AC? It would be much easier to troll the internet for parts/replacements if I had a manufacturer/model. AC searches are coming up empty for this specific setup.

The challenge I see w/ your attempt at repairing is that I'm not sure parts are still available for your lift. Perhaps sourcing a known working trans would be a better option since once you take your trans apart you may not be able to get it working again- just my 2 cents.

Customers love technology- until they have to pay to fix it!
You should be able to take the top cover off the trans and look in there while shifting high/low and see what is wrong. The shift fork may not be secured to the shift shaft properly and not allowing it to go in high.
