Discussion:
Forklift Safety Awareness course

Hi,

Following on from an article about safety awareness courses (Richard Stone Forkliftaction 22 April 2010) I was thinking of running an in-house course for the management about forklift safety. As Richard stated the management don't have to be qualified operators but they do have to know good practice from bad.
What do you suggest I include in the course taking into account the course can only last for approximately one hour.

Hi Paddyb

My name is Simon Docherty and I am the Standards Manager for the largest Lift Truck Accrediting Body in the UK. We have produced and have been marketing for some time a publication which I believe would solve your questions. The publication is titled "Lift Truck Safety Awareness for Managers and Supervisors" It does exactly what it says on the tin. UK Health and Safety Laws make it clear that those who Manage or Supervise lift truck operators or operations must have received adequate training in that field. It covers there responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work act and gives them an insight into operating practices etc. The course is between 6 and 7 hours long and provides a trainers guide and Power Point presentation for use by the Qualified Lift Truck Instructor.

Come back to me if you want to look into it further

Worksafe Victoria has a free pdf publication intended for managers, supervisors as well as operators entitled "Forklift Safety - Reducing the Risk". It is currently being revised to include the new AU training/licensing regulations. You can put your name on a notification list for when it becomes available.

Google: Notify me when Forklift Safety - Reducing the Risk is available

ACT WorkCover has a free pdf publication based on the 2005 Worksafe Victoria publication "Forklift Safety - Reducing the Risk " entitled "A Guide to Forklift Safety". References to training/licensing will be outdated but the rest of the material should still be appropriate.

These publications should be helpful on key forklift safety and regulatory issues.

Forget the one hour training time unless you are looking at one hour per month until all desired safety and regulatory issues are covered. One hour alone is not sufficient to cover the material that managers and supervisors need to know.
