Discussion:
Fire in the hull (bonnet)!

Sorry, have to use this forum to seek help on our tractors.
Recently one of our tractors, those used to tow cargo/baggage, had a fire scare when smoke was emitted from the engine compartment.

According to our service contractor who attended to the tractor, he said the smoke had come from a burnt earth wire from the battery to the starter. He deduced that it was due to over-cranking of the engine. Is this correct?

A few questions?
Why is it being "over-cranked".
Why does it not start?
If the starting current is 400 to 430 amps, the cables should be up to carrying this.
If this was my machine i would fit another starter to rule it out. If the starter is faulty it would explain the long cranking time (slow cranking) and high current. If you have another machine the same, just swap the starters over.

My vendor still insisted that overcranking is the cause, stating that the starting current is 400 to 430 amps, etc etc.

Any way of verifying this?

Overcranking? Most burnt main cables are due to bad conections,Bad cables, starters, ect.I would give it a good checkup and make sure connections are clean and will produce good current flow.
