Be sure the battery is ok and charging system out put is good. If it was the directional switch you would either get no code or get a P-22 or F-16 code. Since you are getting reverse with no code and only coding while in forward then the switch is doing it's job. Very possible you have a forward coil gone south, open wire related to circuit, VCM issue or possibly a meter panel issue. Be sure to check for corrosion in connectors and moisture.
1.Yes it does have the one long solenoid on top of the valve. Looks like the solenoids are actually monthed under the valve body.
2. Revers works fine
3. Yes the fault code is F-85

Check resistance with an ohm meter of the coil for the fwd solenoid....pneumatic models 4-7 ohm. Cushion model 10-15 ohm.... Does this have the large single solenoid on top of the transmission or is it like the nissan trucks with the two solenoids on the right side of the trans, top? If resistance reads good is more likely the switch in the control handle......reverse works ok??? Code listed in your heading is F-85 is this what your getting for your code?
