ok i just got unit to my shop. we changed power steering contactor, line contactor and filter on the line contactor. still gives code.(41) i pulled floor plate and yes the filter is in beteween terminals.i took it a step further and ohmed it out. shows to be open. gonna order another one.# on the board is 1002048-C the motor # is 97L20-00050. it has 2 led lights. when you look down at motor and it has a red light showing. unit will code. green light shows then it will run with no code. just wanted to mention that.

keith,
if it is an older first generation E5000 then see if it has a sevcon motor for the steering motor, if it does then what shovel is saying might be the case, the HPK document i'm looking at deals with that type of motor and says the ESD filter is the problem and it is right at the terminals on the motor.

The PTC filter i speak of in the other HPK document is supposed to reduce or eliminate the error 41 by acting as a current limiter to prevent the over current situation that is triggering the code.

Now i'm sure if you just replace the motor assembly complete that will stop the error for a while but i can bet you after the motor gets some hours on it that it will most likely return.

If those filters are not installed on the truck at the motor and the contactor they should be.

This code is usually not a contactor problem. There has been several technical bulletins. If the p/s relief goes above 1100 psi it will set the code. If you lift the floor pan and look at the p/s motor you will see the two cable connections that should have a ESD filter across the terminals. The p/s pump motor is my biggest code 41 problem. The brush motors were common to fail and sometimes can be repaired. The replacement motors are brushless. If you need part numbers or instructions on the technical updates just let us know.

it has what you need to get the part and install it
the cat dealer should of been able to find this and help you but sometimes you run across those unwilling or just too lazy to do what is necessary to make customers happy unfortunately.
As for that replaced contactor if you can see if you can find out if it is an aftermarket contactor or a OEM part. If it is aftermarket replace it with an OEM part... these aftermarket parts are substandard parts and can cause more problems than they solve sometimes.

I hope this helps

good luck

there is a service bulletin out on this code
has something to do with a voltage drop at the line contactor

they recommend installing a PTC (current limiter) across the contactor power terminals. If it already has one installed then it may need to be replaced or there is some issue with the contactor itself.

i remember when these trucks first came out and started throwing those codes we had issues with bad contactors, installing new tips did not work, the contactor had to be replaced as a complete unit. We also replaced the PTC at the same time.
