Clark C-20:
clark c20b starter problem

I had my forklift in a non-operational state for a few months with a distributor problem and finally put it back together the other night. Fired right up and ran it for 20 minute or so.

Went to move it today and the starter will not engage. Seems like odd timing for something to go bad on the starter or relay, but I can't figure out how that is connected unless I did something putting the seat back on.

When I turn the key I get a slight click somewhere (maybe the relay) but nothing from the starter.

I have charged the battery and checked it (slightly over 12 volts).

If I jump the terminals on the solenoid of the starter it spins.

How do I test out the starter relay (it is a Delco Remy 4 treminal)? It seems I should be able to find a schematic to show me how it is suppose to work but I haven't had luck yet.

Anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks. Scott

Thank you. I couldn't get an understanding of what the terminal to the generator was doing. Makes sense. I will jump that and see if it is the issue.

Is this a real antique with a DC generator?
If so,
Starter relay numbered 1-4 from left to right.
1 - to solenoid energize terminal on starter
2 - hot 12 volts battery
3 - to generator armature terminal
4 - to neutral start switch on top of trans
It works by using the generator armature as the ground but after the motor starts the armature is not a ground anymore and it will prevent the starter from working if the key is turned while the motor is running.
If the relay is clicking but starter not turning try jumping terminals 1 and 2 and the starter should turn. You could probably do away with it if you just connect wires 1 and 4 so the power coming from the neutral switch goes right to the solenoid when you turn the key.
