1986 with a Mazda VA engine. Looking for advice

Hello all, I have owned a 1986 Hyster H60XL made in Ireland for about 5-6 years. Purchase for $700 on prognosis it had a bad head gasket and milkshakes the oil in minutes, and was starting fires with a failed propane carb. I got it home, converted to gasoline using a 1946 CJ Jeep carb (modified to fit the Mazda intake) and have used it, 5 min at a time past several years. In 2022, me, an employee and my father (retired master auto Mech) dismantled the top end of the motor to finally resolve the head gasket, but it stops there. Head gasket was not to blame, but this engine has been over sleeved. My dad, building engines for over 50 years had no words. The sleeves were cut down to fit and even touch each other. This engine block is ruined and will never seal between the block water passages and sleeves, and even the mill surface on the deck isn't level on a straight edge. Machining shop that did it was mediocre and as such this block is worthless. We reassembled it using new gaskets and of course it still milkshakes and I've gone back to using with no coolant at 5 min max intervals.

I really need this thing to run half hour at a time without issues. It's getting tiresome having to cool it off and continue to load stuff or move items around. Everything else about to lift is perfect, just the dam block.
So I've read, this engine is special because it's a PTO for the hydraulic steering right off the block as well, and I've not found another in all those years. I don't want a reman being likely would get same over bore/sleeve issues.
Question is, what fits? What other engine and hydraulic pump could I use? I understand if this machine was Two years older it'd have a GM iron duke, and two years newer a Mazda 2200 engine as found in cars. What will bolt it or up to the bellhousing with little effort? I know very little about forklifts so bear with me. Thank you

Hello, James - There are no easy answers here. The engine you have is an M4-121, in Hyster-speak. Conversion to a GM 4-181 (3L iron duke) wouldn't be easy or straightforward either since the hydraulic pump would be driven at the flywheel end of the engine from a chain drive through a wet bellhousing - incompatible with your setup and existing plumbing/pumps. I'd suggest finding a decent used engine through a used forklift parts supplier - it'll be the most economical and provide the best chance of success overall.
