Counter-gravity castings
Hitchiner Manufacturing will showcase its counter-gravity investment casting technology at this year?s Engine Expo.
This counter-gravity investment casting uses centrifugal force to enable the production of very high- quality turbo wheels in Inconel 713C alloy, meeting increasing durability demands, especially for heavy-duty diesel engine applications.
The company says this technology allows high-quality and near-net-shape castings to be created while allowing designers the freedom to create parts that can perform highly engineered casting within a tightly constrained environment, such as found with VVA rocker arms that perform switching or two-step functions.
Hitchiner plans to display castings including variable valve actuation rocker arms, GDI fuel rail components and heavy-duty turbo wheels for applications that require superior quality. The process is achieved via metallurgical cleanliness, which provides unique fatigue properties for demanding valvetrain components that need a high stiffness-to-inertia ratio.
The company?s work with fuel-rail manufacturers has resulted in the development of robust, near- net-shape castings in stainless steel that are cost effective and able to handle the ever-increasing fuel pressures associated with direct-injection technology.

Engine Expo 2015 exhibitor GKN Sinter Metals is a development partner of one of the world?s largest producers of precision powder metal products.
