WorkSafe Victoria is investigating after a 49-year-old worker died when a shipping container fell onto the forklift he was operating in Dandenong South.

Paramedics were called to a warehouse in Fowler Road after reports of an accident at a removalist firm.

It is understood a component of the forklift failed as the shipping container was being lifted, causing the container to fall back onto the driver's cabin.

The victim has been identified as 44-year-old Darren Lamb, a father of seven.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner.

According to WorkSafe, the death is the second workplace fatality for 2022, two more than at the same time last year. Just last week, a 40-year-old truck driver died after a single vehicle incident at Karramomus, near Shepparton. It is believed the tip truck veered off the road, struck a tree and caught fire.

Meanwhile, the US state of Michigan has recorded its first workplace fatality for 2022.

A steel worker in Dundee was killed in a forklift accident.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) is investigating the workplace fatality that occurred on January 11 in Dundee, south of Milan in Monroe County.
