UKMHA's Forklift Safety Day initiative continuesThe UK Materials Handling Association (UKMHA) has launched the fourth stage of its National Forklift Safety Day initiative, focusing on reporting incidents and accidents as it works to keep safe forklift operation a priority for business.
The theme for the 2024 National Forklift Safety Day campaign is Prevent-Manage-Learn.
The first three stages of the campaign looked at preparing to reduce the chance of a forklift accident, responding to an incident and correct investigation of an incident. While the first of the stages was launched in June, the campaign is still very much active and will run until December.
In line with stage four of the campaign, the UKMHA has made available a range of resources on reporting requirements following a forklift accident, helping stakeholders understand “what needs to be reported, when and to whom”.
“The Reporting of Incidents, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR) and the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) both require that certain workplace incidents and accidents are reported to the relevant enforcement agency,” UKMHA states. “The data produced by these reports is vital to understanding the risks we face and where significant safety gains can be made.”
The first UK National Forklift Safety Day was held in 2019 with the British Industrial Truck Association (BITA) leading the charge. It has become an ongoing initiative of the UKMHA since it was formed following the merger of BITA with the Fork Lift Truck Association.
The fifth stage of the National Forklift Safety Day initiative, looking at how to safely recommence production after an incident, will be launched on 12 October.
