What is the filter that keeps forklifts running clean, without time-wasting downtime for regeneration? The answer is Proventia's CHILI filter. Proventia, a Finnish-Swiss company, has developed an electrically regenerated CHILI filter that cleans itself without any additives in the fuel during driving by heating the filter elements. This means no time-wasting downtime for cleaning the emission system in workshops, a clear advantage that distinguishes CHILI from other particulate filters on the market.

The secret behind CHILI lies in its ability to clean itself during driving, avoiding maintenance breaks. The self-maintenance of the CHILI is based on three filter elements and their cyclical regeneration, which ensures that the purification process continues even during the regeneration. CHILI system adapts the regeneration to the operation routines, not only based on operating time, but also by measuring back pressure and initiating the regeneration only when necessary. During the regeneration process of a filter element, exhaust gas is routed through the two other filter elements.

"CHILI is a smart system. Continuous back pressure measuring controls the regeneration so that the regeneration process will not start too early, but only when it is necessary", explains Petri Saari, Vice President of Proventia Emission Control. "Gradually CHILI's control system 'learns' the operation routines of the machine and activates the regeneration at intervals based on the earlier operation routines. Furthermore, the back pressure measuring guarantees the timely regeneration - even if the routines change", Saari continues.

CHILI is at its best in diesel engines in the range of 0.1l to 5.5l or with a maximum output of 75kW. CHILI offers a PM reduction of over 90% and with an optional pre-catalyst, a CO and HC reduction exceeding 80%. It operates without any additives and also offers excellent noise reduction. A complete filter includes three filter substrates working as a heating element for soot burning, three electrically controlled exhaust valves, six hi-current relays and the inlet and outlet connection piping which can be modified to suit the actual application. An automotive standardised control unit and electrical wire harness are also included to complete the installation.

With its compact measurements (320 x 440 x 330mm), CHILI is a perfect emission control solution for forklifts and other light-duty machines like street sweepers and mini excavators, where space is limited and the exhaust temperatures low.

Initial forklift installations have been very successful. "Our forklift customers have been enthusiastic about the new product. A self-cleaning, user-friendly filter, operating without any additives seems to interest a lot, since there is no other product for smaller diesel machines on the market that would be as easy to use as CHILI - nor efficient in cleaning the emissions in a cost-effective way. CHILI's patent-pending technology has already proven its performance in laboratories as well as in everyday use. We use similar technology for the emission cleaning of auxiliary power units in trucks in the US, where the technology fulfils California's stringent emission regulations", Saari reveals.
