Prisoner uses forklift in attempt to escape

Convicted murderer Kevin Wayne Newland, 25, drove a forklift in attempting to escape prison while an accomplice with scissors held the sole unarmed guard hostage.

Members of the Clallam Bay Corrections Center team gave verbal commands that Newland ignored, fired a warning shot and then killed Newland as the forklift ploughed into a perimeter fence. The other high-profile inmate, Dominick Maldonado, 25, gave up upon seeing Newland shot.

Newland and Maldonado were assigned as sewing machine operators. The garment shop makes uniforms and coveralls for inmates.
Once Maldonado grabbed the guard, Newland took the officer's keys, unlocked the forklift and rammed through a roll-up door.

Newland was serving a 45-year sentence for murder. Maldonado was convicted of a shopping mall shooting spree and sentenced to serve 163 years.

The 29 June incident lasted about 20 minutes and prompted a lockdown order for the entire Clallam Bay facility.

The center opened in 1985, employs 250 corrections officers and has an operating capacity for 858 offenders with 850 currently there, according to Ronald Fraker, superintendent.

Clallam Bay is an unincorporated community on the Olympic peninsula in the State of Washington. In a straight-line measurement, Clallam Bay is about 120 mi. (192 km) west-northwest of Seattle.
