Maintain Reach Truck Operator Compartment Integrity

Only the operator should enter the operator’s compartment.

Sometimes, reach truck operators encounter an unexpected and dangerous “guest” in the operator’s compartment: a horizontal rack beam. It might just bump her. It might seriously injure her. It might kill her.

This rack beam intrusion is also known as underride. It occurs when a reach truck continues to reverse unimpeded into a horizontal rack beam, pinning the operator between the beam and the front of the compartment.

Compartment integrity means that cross beams are physically blocked from entering the compartment. Your options are:

  1. Place bumpers on the floor along the length of the racking. The bumpers act as a curb, preventing the reach truck from reversing any further into the rack.
  2. Arrange all rack cross beam heights so that they hit the reach truck body or overhead guard before the truck can reverse further.
  3. Enclose one or both sides of the operator compartment rear with vertical posts. This adds physical barriers to the reach truck itself, running from the truck body to the overhead guard. This guarding provides the best compartment integrity.

The Backbone for Reach Trucks is designed to provide operator compartment integrity. Its one-piece design means there are no welded joints, and no weak points to snap in case of impact. It’s been tested and verified to comply with ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 Standards.

Equip your fleet of reach trucks and stand-up forklifts with The Backbone for greater compartment integrity. Because only the operator should be entering the operator compartment.
