This week's coverage of Northland Industrial Truck Co Inc's expansion seems to be part of a trend. Almost weekly, we read about US dealerships expanding and taking on new brands. It looks like the big are getting bigger, with more brands, more locations and more offerings.
On the one hand, clearly this consolidation brings economies of scale. It also brings wider choice to consumers. But there are also losers in the shake-up - and these include the small, independent dealers who face mammoth competitors, and, to some extent, customers whose choice is limited. When all the major brands are under a single roof, it's almost impossible to shop around for a better deal.
Overall, though, consolidation must surely be adding to the professionalism of forklift retailing and ensuring that businesses are stronger, more robust and able to withstand the ups and downs of the economy.
