A battery-powered crawler crane is now in operation at Gammon Construction in Hong Kong.

The Liebherr LR 1160.1 unplugged crane, which is driven by an electric engine, has a lifting capacity of 160 T and can run for four hours.

Producing no emissions and less noise, the crane can be recharged within 4.5 hours.

It can also be used in both plugged and unplugged modes, which provides flexibility in its site deployment.

It is the first battery-powered crane to arrive to the region and is deployed on Gammon’s Terminal 2 project at Hong Kong International Airport.

Featuring an alternative drive system, it can save up to 76 T of carbon dioxide equivalent each year.

Gammon is aiming to cut 55% of its energy-related emissions this year through early site electrification, electric plant and vehicles, increased energy efficiency and the adoption of modern methods of construction.

“Gammon believes business sustainability and environmental sustainability are inherently interlinked,” says chief executive Kevin O’Brien.

“Introduction of the first electric crawler crane to Hong Kong demonstrates Gammon’s commitment towards net zero.

“We look forward to having quieter, cleaner and lower carbon construction sites for the future.”
