FIATA is concerned about container imbalances
The International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) is urging shipping lines to review their business and operational practices and to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure a regular flow of cargo and containers.

"FIATA is enhancing its service to all its members to overcome this unprecedented crisis together and support the reconstruction of trade, which will closely see the integration of the industry worldwide," says FIATA director general Stephane Graber.

FIATA is concerned about container imbalances which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic as economies have taken different approaches to freight movements. It expects the effects to continue for some time.

The association notes that the World Customs Organisation's Private Sector Consultative Group (of which FIATA is a member) has recommended the removal of restrictions on containers because current restrictions are limiting the number of empty containers available to exporters. "If this continues, sooner or later, it will result in a halt in all container trade due to non-availability of empty containers. This is a very real and major concern," says an association white paper titled Container imbalances and COVID-19.
