We see a new concept in forklift sales this week - dynamic pricing. Two manufacturers this week flag the move to dynamic pricing in their latest financial reports.
The pricing model is well established in industries like accommodation, where hotels charge different rates depending on the day of the week, the season, and whether there are major events on in town.
Now, forklift buyers can expect to pay more if they need a machine quickly, if they order at the same time as many other buyers, or when steel prices are on the rise, for example.
Given the bulging order books and shortages on the supply side, the pricing model makes sense for suppliers, but it will be tricky for buyers and their procurement teams - and especially difficult for budgeting.
And who knows how long this will last?
