A forklift was used to extract an antelope that had bolted out of its enclosure at a US zoo, jumped a fence and fallen into a moat.

Associated Press reported the 650lb (295kg) male bongo antelope had butted a low-voltage electrified wire fence and become entangled.

After freeing himself, the antelope, named Jo, bolted, jumped a fence and ended up in the rhinoceros exhibit's moat.

Toledo Zoo workers drained the moat and used a forklift to rescue the two-year-old antelope.

But to no avail. Veterinarians said Jo died of stress-related trauma.
