A forklift is believed to have caused a flood in Auckland's central public library which damaged more than 20,000 books and other items on November 23.

Library conservators were yet to establish whether any of the damaged books and sheet music could be repaired, a New Zealand Herald report said.

A city council spokesman would not confirm that a forklift being used on an escalator replacement job struck a water main, causing the flood.
