For forklift professionals, industry exhibitions are an opportunity to meet friends, old and new, show off their wares and establish or cultivate business relationships.
For those attending CeMAT in Hannover, Germany, the exhibition is also an opportunity to participate in the world's largest materials handling fair, and a chance to truly stamp their corporate identities on the world stage.
CeMAT 2002 this month was a business bonanza, with millions of dollars, euros, rand, yen and other currencies being invested into new deals, lavish exhibition displays and "schmoozing" with new and potential clients.
More than 80,000 industry professionals browsed the expanse of CeMAT, which showcased the industry's past, present and future direction. Many companies launched new products, while others used the show as a branding exercise and reference point for customers.
Organisers Messe AG said CeMAT 2002 was "integral" to the success of the Hannover Fair this year. In total, 995 firms exhibited, with the top 10 countries represented being Germany (544 exhibits), Italy (100), China (39), Sweden (35), France (33), Netherlands (30), the USA (22), Great Britain (20), Switzerland (19) and Austria (17).
The German contingent, which German Engineering Federation president Diether Klingelnberg said "plays a leading role, both from a technological and a market-share perspective", represented a market segment with exports totalling EUR5 billion.
Hot topics among forklift manufacturers included three-phase electric motors, ergonomics, improved driver seats and joystick operation. Maintenance and service packages and the one-stop shop concept were also a focus.
Exhibitor feedback to Forkliftaction.com News has been resoundingly positive, with most taking some new business back to their home countries after the show.
While a decision is forthcoming over the future cycle of CeMAT, as revealed by Forkliftaction.com News last week, the enthusiasm and quality of this year's show should ensure its enduring success.
