In the logistic chain, paper roll handling is one of the most common applications. The varying roll paper grades, weight and diameter, plus the high value of the rolls, make it essential to
match the handling equipments to the operation needs and to use the attachments more suitable for the properties of the rolls.Tim Wilson, U.S. pulp and paper national account manager at
Bolzoni Auramo Inc., shared his interesting experience with the Morrison Industrial Equipment Company - one of the largest providers of new and used forklifts, service, parts and rental in Michigan and Indiana - and Advance Packaging Co. - corrugated packaging manufacturer, printer and converter.
Advance Packaging was handling a 60-inch paper roll that weighed 9,000 lbs, heavier than anything they had ever handled before. The most suitable forklifts they had were a 12,000 lbs, but the mast was too tall to fit into its rail wagons, and a 15,000 lbs, too heavy to fit into the trailers. Furthermore, trucks were often overheating, burning the driver's legs. In addition, the clamps used for this handling were applying too much clamping force, causing out-of-roundness damage, while the hydraulic hoses connecting clamp to the truck were leaking and seeping into the paper roll.
This was the information Nathan Delaney, account manager at Morrison Industrial Equipment Company, received during his cold call to Advance Packaging.

To help the customer, Delaney contacted Tim Wilson, and, as a result, he was able to find the combination between the right attachment and forklift truck features.
Tim proposed the
Bolzoni Auramo ARC90 paper roll clamp, offering the required capacity to equip a 12,000 lbs truck.
Compared to other suppliers' systems having hydraulic motor, this clamp uses the Bolzoni Auramo rotating system dedicated to paper roll clamp giving higher rotating torque and lower lost load. The adjustable pressure relief valve for the control of the clamping force avoids out-of-roundness damage, and a 180° cushioned stop in the vertical position allows for safe and damage-free stacking of the paper rolls.
Delaney's second step was the choice of the forklift truck. He found the
12,000 lbs Cat lift truck GC55KPRSTR, with a dedicated paper handling chassis and technical features ideal for loading/unloading Advance Packaging's trailers and rail wagons.
Thanks to the cooperation between Morrison Industrial Equipment and
Bolzoni Auramo and the combined expertise of Nathan Delaney and Tim Wilson, the customer found the solution to his handling problem and a simple cold call turned into a sale, marking the start of a fruitful and rewarding partnership.
