yes it was just a packing ring, the old one's that came off were solid. love to see them do it at the factory.
i stick the composite seal in my pocket before i start to strip the ram. by the time your ready for it,it,s nice an warm. slip it on and **** a hoseclip over it for 5. then use hyd oil to slide it back in the cylinder. bingo job done
If its just a packing that goes either side of a o ring then cutting at a angle is a recognised way to fit,if it is a composite type seal which fits over a piston head with another rubber seal underneath then warming up in hot water is best then use a seal clamp tool(looks like a piston ring clamp/sleeve)for 1/2hr this puts it back in shape.
what a nightmare, tried again to do these backing ptfe/nylon seals and again fiting them caused them to distort and leak.
i rang the hydraulic firm that does our more specialised cylinders and they surgested i put a slit/cut across the ring at an angle. i tried that and it worked a treat!!! time will tell if it lasts.
We heat them up in a pot of hydraulic fluid. It makes them pliable and then work them onto the rod with a screw driver. It works well for us.
thanks mate, i must admit i think heating it up did more harm than good.
i've done loads in the past, but they've all been the split type so are dead easy.
lube the piston up good and do it with my bare hands. no need to "heat" the seal, just get a good vise that wont scratch the cylinder to hold the cylinder rod.
I do it all the time....
but it is a "pig to fit"
