Discussion:
Starter

I walked in on a competitor giving a customer a quote on his forklift. He told the owner that the starter cone had broken off and got into the hydraulic pump and destroyed it. He showed the owner that fluid ran out when he removed the starter and that is what led him to that diagnosis. It has the GM engine in it. Does this truck have a wet clutch? The owner offered it to me at $800. Does the diagnosis fit? Is it worth it? It has about 4500 hours on it and newer tires. Let me know, thanks, Jim ser. # A187V13902R

best i can tell from the serial number of the truck A187V range
they say either a 388040 or 326875 depending on production dates (engine serial numbers).

the reman available is 3003784R

i ran your truck serial number through thier db and it comes up invalid number so it may be an older truck not in thier db (pre 2000) or u got some numbers wrong.

I don't have the starter number for the 50. The ones I work on are 80's with the GM V-6.

I would like to fix and sell the unit. I had a feeling that the rookie mechanic made an error. It does have the pump on the trans. I want to install a new starter and fill the housing and drive away. Do you know the starter number? Thanks, Jim

The XL series lifts I work on (8000lb) have a wet bellhousing. Take the floorboard off & see if the hydraulic pump is on top of the trans, if it is, then the bellhousing is wet.

The hyd. system has a filter in the tank- I would doubt that the starter remnants got into the hyd pump. What are the symptoms of the hyd system?

I personally have had starter noses break off in the bellhousing. Cleaning out the bellhousing, flushing the hyd oil & replacing the hyd filter was all that was needed- the lift had no lingering symptoms- that was about 1000 hours ago

What would you do with the lift- fix & resell or fix & use?
