Discussion:
Display says "dEAD" or 'Lo"

I have an EP20KT. The battery measures around 50 volts reading at the measured at the terminals to contactor and NEG terminal. I have also checked the BDI setting and it is showing the same voltage as I am measuring. The BDI display is showing full voltage. I have checked all the voltages on the logic card as shown in service manual and they are in specification. Looing at the service manual, I am assuming that the logic board measures voltage between CN2-33 and gnd (CN2-63,64). The voltage there is same as the battery voltage. I assumed it was the logic board so I replaced login board and have the same results with both boards.
By turning the key on and off I can every one in a while get the steering motor to come on and then I can operate they hydraulics for 3-30 seconds until the display again says LO and/or dead.

ANy ideas what else to check?

Hi John,

I have a Caterpillar E3000 that when turned on is won't do anything, the display lights up and reads "dead" battery is full charged.

Can you elaborate on what part you changed out and where I can buy it. Sound like the same problem.

You can text me directly at 424-308-3066.

Your help would be greatly appreciated

Ok. After more component level troubleshooting I started following the current flow. The first check after all the voltages on the battery was the main contactor. The resistance was about 120ohm. A bit out of specification. I changed it with the regen contactor and it came to life. When I looked the bad contactor to about 36 volts it drew way too much current. It heated up and when i then checked the resistance it was about 15 ohms.

What it looked like is that the contactor was heating up and then increasing the current it was drawing pulling down the power supply on the login board making the logic board report a very low battery and shutting down. Let it cool down a few minutes and it would work for 20 seconds or so until the coil heated up again and pulled too much current from the logic board shutting it down again. Well I feel good about finding this problem without swapping more parts.
