Discussion:
Hydraulic pump screaming!!

First off, it's a 2010 7FBE20 not an 18 but as there wasn't a drip down bar for an 20 I've gone for 18, I doubt it'll make much difference.

Sorry for long winded post but I'm trying to give every bit of info I have or know of.

Ok, hydraulic pump screams it's head of only on lift function, it barely lifts, as though lift cylinder was by passing on piston or you'd think low on oil.

Tilt and steering ok, side shift slightly better than lift but still quite noisy non the less.

You'd think the lift relief valve was just dumping oil back to tank and hydraulic pump racing away like crazy when you just touch the lift microswitch, you don't even need to open the lift spool, the pump runs flat out as soon as you close the lift microswitch.

History;
Hydraulic tank completely drained, flushed and refilled with fresh oil, new return filter fitted.
Swapped hyd pump with another known good truck - still the same.
Blanked off full free lift cylinder to see if it would lift ok on second stage cylinders - no different.

Forklift was purchased with known hydraulic issues, error A5 and A6, could not operate any hydraulic functions at all, no status light on board.

Fitted another material handing hydraulic control board and steering, tilt, side shift come good - no more error codes but as I say pump screams it's head off and runs full speed when you touch the lift.
Pulled the main lift pressure relief valve and tilt relief valve, no obvious signs of spring/seat damage.
Could it possibly be something in the setting which need to be altered to suit new material handling board?
I know you can adjust pump speeds on these but I'm not sure how?
That said, I'm not sure reducing pump speeds will help as it doesn't lift when pump is running flat out so reducing speed (to quieten the pump down a bit) probably won't address the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Did this ever get resolved? I'm having the same issue with our truck.
Thanks

I'm a Toyota tech in the US, Replace main control valve assy, or you can take the time to pull it out and take up/down valve assy out but sounds like replacement is easier option, if your swapping parts from the exact model and serial number range, settings and controller s are not the issue

Pickup will be too close to the base of the tank it may have been damaged underneath and pushed the tank up slightly and the pressure on lift is pulling the base of the tank closer hence the screaming and slow lift.

Have you found access to the dash display. I'm certain with a search, you can get the passwords. The service manuals are available for purchase. There should be nothing secret about that information. It looks like my last post didn't go through that was several days ago.

Hi ErichO,

No, I don't know how to access the on board functions or do the matching settings? I seem to recall something from many years ago about pressing 3&4, then 2, then 3 etc etc etc but to be honest I'd just be guessing at best and even then if I did strike lucky and managed to get in I'd still not be sure what to match?

Okay, yes, you'll want to get the truck settings/configurations set correctly. You'll need to go through the matching procedures. Once that is correct, then decide what the next step in diagnosing the lifting issue will be.
Do you have access to the onboard functions on the display?

Thanks for reply ErichO, tried that first of all but it was tight, all good.

I'm begining to wonder if 1 of 2 things have happened here;

Scenario 1;
I've "created" this fault by replacing the main hydraulic controller and do the load sense settings on the new controller not match the truck?

Scenario 2;
This was the original fault all along and hydraulics overheated causing the initial error codes of A5 A6 and caused the main hydraulic controller to crap out in the first place?

Obviously there was no way of telling what the hydraulic functions were doing before we replaced the hydraulic controller as we originally had no hydraulics to test.

Wow, good report on the symptoms and the attempts to resolve. It sounds to me like you have an issue with oil control valve.
Make sure the lift locking/unlocking bolt is closed. I doubt that is the issue but can cause loss of lift efficiency. Confirm the lift spool is stroking completely. With the aux functions being normal, it doesn't sound like a pump problem. As far as barely lifting, tells me the oil is not being solely directed to the lift cylinders. I would think you could tell by feel if there is a significant flow through the return filter or hoses.
