Identify mystery charging system part

This part melted against the exhaust. I can't identify any part numbers. It's a rectangular black plastic part, has 4 spades, but only 2 wires were connected to it. One of the wires goes to the alternator. It must be a diode or resistor, I'm thinking. I don't know how to post pictures here.
