brake repair

need to replace brake shoes and wheel cylinders. how do I separate the brake drum from the final drive shaft? The 8 slotted screws that appear to hold the shaft to the drum rotate but do not come out. Do they need to be removed or what do they do? Thanks for any help this is driving me crazy.

Got everything apart, cleaned, replaced brake shoes, cylinders and all seals and o-rings. Remounted everything on machine and put on new brake line. Now need to fill front diff with ATF fluid. Anyone know how much it takes or what to measure to know ATF fluid is at the proper level.

Also anyone have any experience with replacing the original ignition system with one from pertonix ignitors ?

Once you've removed the housing from the truck, move forks close enough together to hold the housing with the with the slotted nut facing up. The housing should be no more than a couple of inches off of the floor. Loosen the slotted nut so it is flush with the end of the axle shaft. Using a block of wood pound on the axle shaft. If needed use a sledge hammer.
Check with your local Linde dealer for the O rings. T he big one is probably about 18" in diameter.

Thanks for the reply. That is how I thought to do it. However , I have pounded on the shaft with a large sledge hammer with no luck. Could I use an arbor press or is there something else ? Also , assuming I can get it apart where do I find replacement O rings ?

This is definitely turning into a project.

You have to remove all of the nuts on the back side the housing. remove the housing and then remove the slotted axle nut. Pound on the end of the axle shaft with a block of wood and that will separate the assembly to expose the brakes.
The red fluid is ATF which you will need to refill once you've completed the brake job. Replace all of the brake parts including the 2 big O rings.
