Discussion:
How would you guys handle this situation

In my years at this company as a road service tech. I have developed the reputation for being a straight shooter and calling it like it is. Honest 8 hours work for 8 hours pay and my co-workers have known me for this good work ethic. Well over a year ago I posted a help wanted topic in the technicall portion of this site and got some good feed back and fixed the problem I had. Today I was at a customer and got a call from my dispatcher to come to the office no matter what I was doing. I knew this was not good but could not figure it out for the life of me.
Once at the office went straight to the service managers office, did not pass GO or nothing. My dispatcher did not even know what was going on as we walked to the office. This whole conversation now lasted maybe two minutes so bear with me. The head guy ask me a few questions and I said yes to them as it was all true, got nothing to hide, and told me got an email from his boss, the president of the company, with a copy of my post. Well turns out my asking for help in a public forum where the competion could read this is a HUGE mistake and I dont need to devulge company interest. I never once slandered my company in anyways, shape or form but asked a simple question on my own time using my resources. Once I told him I used my own time and resources that was the end of the conversation and was asked to leave.

Am I in the wrong for what I have done or is the company wrong for what they have done? Nothing was writen down today that we had this meeting so could I treat it as it never happened? There is nothing in the employee manual that says I cant do what I did.

WOW! so which industry did you find that doesn't have "mental midgets" in charge. i'm too old to change but some of the younger "inquiring minds" may want to know

easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission.
You must work for Barloworld, their management is the only group stupid enough to be upset over getting the job done. Apparently you must have a minimal knowledge service manager otherwise he/she could have gotten you the answer.

Glad I'm out of the lift truck industry for good it appears to be over run with mental midgets.
I had a very similar experience lately at my work place. I posted a question about my company here and they found it and where concerned. Like yours it was not slandering the company in anyway shape or from. We to have a union and they said the samething your union did. I am not sure where you live but I got legal advise and it was money well spent to learn your rights as a worker. I did the same thing you did by posting on my own time using my own computer in this public forum which the company has no controll over. I opted to remove my post as I just dont want conflict with work but legally I did not have to. My new moto is

"Do your work as thoroughly as you can to the best of your ability and only do what your told to do"

If you are concerned for your job I would recommend get legal advise for an attorney that specialises in workers rights.

I am a big fan of keep a low profile as out of sight out of mind has been my way to keep management happy for years. I spoke with the union rep. today and explained the whole situation to them and his response to this whole thing is the company can go pound sand. Legally I did nothing wrong by using my own time, resources and did not slander the company in anyway on this website. Life goes on to another day.

It seems you are smart guy there is always away to keep both the customer & management happy. When it comes to mkeeping the management side happy best adviseis to "keep a low profile & travel quiclkly in teh dark."

After this whole experience I think I will just leave the customer unit down and use the proper channels from within no matter how long it takes to fix thier unit. If you think about it, it is not my call to try to run my van the way I want to but the way the company wants me to. On a funnier note with this whole thing I must be doing a horrible job for the fact I have five customers that will wait for me while there unit is down and dont want no one else there and one waited six days while I was on vacation.

Sometimes people's egos/pride get in the way of good common sense. The head guy may view what you did as a sign of weakness of his company as they had to go to the outside for help or some one (maybe your direct boss)in the company may have felt you went around the organization and complained to the big boss.
You just need to be aware of things like that - your mission was correct take care of the customer first - w/o customers it is hard to pay the bills..

seems to me you did what you did to help your employer make money!!! if he has a problem with what you did he may not be thinking clearly. what's wrong with taking care of customers? i hope this post doesn't get you into trouble but i think what you did is admirable, the world needs more honest people (mostly in government)
