Discussion:
Saving payroll, is it worth it?

Hey everyone,

I'm doing some research to see how cost-effective it is to create more expensive machines that allow one person to do more. Hyster has a nice looking model: the B60(80)ZAC which has the ability to move three pallets at one time. This seems like a big advantage over a forklift, but it means buying a big expensive piece of equipment and all that entails. I'm a total newb to the business (cold and dry storage) and am trying to get a feel for how much something like that is worth. I assume they don't post prices, but if anyone has any clue how much one is that'd be great. Also, how much is something like that worth to a business? 10k? 50k? 2k? I know there is a lot of variance, but any guesses would be helpful. Thanks!

how many pallets you can carry has more to do with where and how you intend to put them down and/or away. the weight capacity and turn radius is more of importance as far as how much you carry, and still it has no value if you can not maneuver to pick up or put away.
the concept of "worth to a business" is very relative, and requires a point to compare towards, (how much would it cost to have unskilled temp workers move the same load the same distance by hand and feet? how much could you move the load for with a hand pallet jack or 'hand truck'? are you only going to use the 3 loader for 20 minutes and could use a single loader 1 hour to do the same work, but you can also use the single loader for 12 hours doing other work, where the tripple loader would sit?)
