I recently had a glc50 do the same thing- a first for me. I did notice that the brake adjustment was way off prior to the brake rebuild. The symptom was weird- the brakes would lock as if the shoes were sticky-took brakes apart & brakes were dry but found the bent up shoes as you mention- I wrote it off as an adjustment issue- perhaps I was wrong?
