Is this a common problem ?
I have seen one failure like the one mentioned but I noticed the starter had been replaced with an offshore starter and the nose of the starter was approx half the thickeness of the oe starter. An oe starter was put in and the problem was solved. Oh for what its worth I had a GM dealer trace the casting # and it came up as a marine unit.
