Discussion:
P5000 codes

Hello all,
I have a customer with a Cat P5000 that is showing an E3 code. Can anyone tell me what this is? A list of codes would also be handy.

nicely put edwardt
but i thought the caterpillar p5000 was the diesel engine that powered the Red October ;o)
hehe

ok, enough kidding around now :o)
yes that code may be persistant until cleared and can only be cleared when the problem is resolved. If the problem is not resolved then the code will return and stay there till once again cleared. via diagnoser or the pedal dance, your choice.

But i will reitterate that the relays have been a problem in these trucks since thier introduction into the market and only in the past year or 3 have they updated them with a better one that does not fail as quickly. (the green ones).
If that truck is a newer one with a serial number after AT351xxxxx then it most likely has the new ones in it.

since it stays on, I would check inside the plug connectors on both the ecm and vcm and ohm them out..

First I want to make sure -this- "Caterpillar p5000" is a forklift with tires, not the suit that Ripley wears when she tosses the evil alien back into space (which is also a 'Caterpillar P5000'). The forklift is correctly called a "Cat lift truck P5000 (a MCFA product)" while the future 'Caterpillar P5000' is a Caterpillar Inc. product and trademark.
I don't think the one RIpley ran didn't have an operators manual in the seat, but the forklift one should, and it should have an error list in the Operator's manual, about page 102 or so.
Is that 'handy' enough?
:-)

now in all seriousness,,,
If it starts and runs great, then with a code e-03, I would expect that code to be a 'historical' code that may have been introduced during troubleshooting. Does this code stay on the dash and prevent you from seeing the hour meter when the truck is running, or does it just show when the key is first turned on and gores away when the machine is running?

"it's not rocket surgery"
according to the code chart any 03 code is a VCM communication error
their probable causes listed for E03 are
- connector contact bad
- harness bad
- VCM controller bad
- controller bad

now these are just generic possible causes and may not be the actual cause, they just give you general areas to look at.
As kevin said, check the relay box and there are 2 EGI relays that control ecm power and ignition coil. Then there is a MainC relay that controls LP Fuel lockoff, another one ETC Relay that controls the electronic throttle control, and the last one for GAS Fuel Pump Relay (not used on LP trucks but is there)
There should be a diagram of which ones are which in the lid of the relay box.
You can try swapping them around and see if the problem changes and/or goes away. Also if it has the black relays in it those have been updated to a new style relay that is green. When you order the part it will automatically get you the new style as the old ones are no longer in circulation. If this is the case i would replace ALL of them.

good luck :o)

Steve,
E03 is ECM Supply power circuit,I would check the relay(s) more than likely one is bad,or a fuse is blown.

So, you should have a defective temp sensor or bad wiring. In diesel series the sensor is located on the right side of the forklift in the bottom of the transmission, not sure if its the same for your model.
You might have a defective display(hope not!),I had a problem with a Mitsubishi very similar, but with pilot lights on.
Just to remember,im not sure if that code is means exactly what i described, sometimes US forklifts and Europe forklifts looks similar, but have several differences!I hope that helped.best ragards.
