Clark C500 SERIES:
inching valve and/or parts

HELP! I have a customer with a C500s60 355-1204-4046 don't they make good inching slave cylinders for these anymore or what??? I've replaced many of these with no problems but here's the story for this special piece. First was just a normal replacement it lasted about 4 months and I figured must have been a small defect no big deal so I replaced it again. Next he calls back 1 month later same problem so I figure out that the seals are shrinking and check around and find the old style piston and cup and install it. He calls back 2 weeks later same problem inching master cylinder is dry and has leaked out of the slave cylinder so I inspect it and find the side is wore off the piston cup. By now I have called some manufacturers to see if I can get a better material to no avail so after doing a little more research find that there should be a spring and cup centering plug so I installed this with all new parts again but 2 weeks is all it will last. Anybody have a better solution than dynamite!!!

Thanks for your reply. Yes the first two were complete replacements but the new style seal was perfect fit from new so a little time in brake fluid made it just shrink enough to leak, then the next two were new pieces that I had to assemble. Yes I'm using DOT 3 and it is flushed for sure the past half year its probably had 2 gallon through it. And by the way it has a new sequence valve on it too. I thought of replacing the master cylinders just for kicks but it don't fit any technical reasoning. Every machine I have worked on I can reason why the part failed or can find the source of the problem but this one has me to my limits.

Are you rebuilding the slave cyl? We use to rebuild them back in the day but have found installing a new assy is a lilttle bit more $$$ but saves you in the long run. Stupid question. I know you are putting the right brake fluid in ( DOT 3)
But I have seen drivers put anything ( Trans, engine oil......water ) they can find into the brake master cyl and spoil the brake fluid and screw up the rubber seals. you might have to flush the brake lines. Hope this helps.
