I purchased a Hyster S50XL forklift and did bunch of maintenance. Lots of water in hydraulic fuild, changed many oil seals on cylinders changed steering motor cause it was steering one way fast and hard the other way. Changed every filter washed out the hydraulic tank and put new AW32 S Super oil in it.
When the forklift lifts hard like lifting the end of a container the hydraulic makes an unneeded amount of noise "it seems as the pump", " a check valve", or "also sounds like if pump had gear drive, would click splines". It still lifts well. Would like to do pre maintenance before something badly goes wrong.

Sounds like a Hyster S50XL with a Mazda engine?, the pump is driven off a chain and sprocket set up off the front of the engine, when the chain wears out it will start jumping teeth on the sprocket, giving the clicking noise you speak of, usually very noticeable at end of travel during tilt function,
I went to the forklift parts store and looked for the pump and it shows a shaft driven spline pump. H50XL I mentioned a S50XL which is not the right number for my truck. I am told the mechanic who did most the work with maintenance says he had the pump right to pcs and it looked new still yet so it can't be the splines. I guess will just wait it off and see what happens if anything ever happens.
if your hydraulic pump is in center of truck you may have a chain drive pump and it may be slipping ?
