Manitou M50-4:
Grinding of the brakes and noise coming out of axle

Machine is a MANITOU M50-4, year 2008 with DANA-SPICER axle with wet brakes, type 112-204.
Until first service on axle was done everything was fine (they didn't use the machine 10-12 per day at the beggining). After first service on 80 working hours (first change according to MANITOU 50-100 hours, then every 500 hours) the problems occured - they also started to work 10-12 day per hard work. We replaced the original oil with original MANITOU immersed brakes oil, specification is 85W90 (API GL4 - MIL L-2105).
After changing the oil customer called us at 150 working hours that there is some strange noise coming from axle when he brakes. The problem is even more obivious when the axle gets hot or they really work hard. And you can also hear the sound only when the truck is almost at stop, lets say from 7-5 km/h per hour to full stop 0 km/h. When you brake at high speed you can't hear the noise or is there very very seldom.

I have a the same problem on the other machine with CLARK HURT axle, type 112-284. There the problem occured at 1.600 hours and they work hard also 10-12 hours per day. We changed the brake discs inside the axle put new oil inside as mentioned above, added the additive for immerse brakes (for no noise) but the problem occured again after 500 hours.

I am lost, any1 can help me ?

Well we solved the problem finally.
What we did:
- changed the old braking discs (only lamella type)
- changed original MANITOU oil with FUCHS TITAN GEAR LS 90 which has an API GL5 standard

Till now the problem is solved (about 50 hours of working...)

We already tried that additive called "Additive for immersed brake fluid" original MANITOU packing - no other specification but with no result. The brake squawk is still there. We even changed the discs on the other machine with no result. We have ordered new set of discs for this machine and the part number has changed from the old to new. Maybe they have had some problems at DANA and are delivering some new discs with other materials. We will see. Hope this goes away as I don't see any other solution to the problem!

your manitou dealer should stock the additive in 1 litre bottles ,that should be enough to boost the properties in the axle oil and get rid of the noise

Yes we did drain all the oil from all three drain plugs. We will put original MANITOU oil "Special oil for immersed brakes". What kind of additive do you suggest ? Do you have any specification of this additive ? Is it SHELL, BP, CASTROL, ELF, TOTAL, ARAL ?
Thanks!

i think you need to flush the axle before refilling , use normal hydraulic oil for flushing. the oil from manitou should be ok boosted with more additive. most agricultural dealers will stock a brake additive. silly question, did you drain both sides and the diff housing. there should be 3 drain plugs on the bottom of the axle

the official name for the noise you are hearing is brake squawk. you need to change the oil again and add the additive again
