Discussion:
Frozen steering on freezing mornings

I'm looking for tips or tricks to keep my steering from locking up due to the freezing temperatures. When first arriving to work the lift starts excellently (I plug in the block warmer). I can usually slowly raise/lower extend/retract the boom. I can also shift into gear and drive forward and backward. However I will not be able to steer. The steering wheel will not budge. Something must be freezing overnight but I have no clue what or how to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

although the block warmer may heat up the engine to allow it to start in cold weather it does not transfer enough into the hydraulic system to allow it to function correctly until you run the lift long enough to heat up the hydraulic oil.

You may want to service the hydraulic system

Check the service manual for your machine to see what types and grades of oil pertain to your application.
The manuals are available to view on their website for public viewing.
