The part numbers are the same on the box between the new style and older style drive pots.

The failure point in the accelerator assy that caused the code 51 was always the start switch wiper..therefore the temporary fix of adding on an external mechanical start switch. There is now a new accelerator part number that seems to have rectified the problem. No need now to do the temporary fix of the external start switch.

As a side note.....this is only one of a few fixes....code 51 can also be caused by a mis adjusted pot, and they have also found bad splices in some of the accelerator harnesses...in the negative wire....the mod dosent really "bypass" the accelerator switch, it just provides for mounting an external accel switch...the ones internal in the pot are prone to failure

Had this code 100 times! replaced the pot each time. Always found thew "on" switch part erratic. Had many trucks with same thing. New pots right out of the box were bad. So, one day i got fed up and took one apart. Cleaned it, tightened the spring wipers then glued it back together. Lasted 2 years. Did all other trucks. Cheap fix that works

forkliftdude,

is it a mcfa TC, hpk or psb document from them?
if so what is the media number on it?
i did not see any of those when i was looking through my information.
That seems rather odd mcfa would approve a fix that would bypass a component, they generally find a better component and just update it with the replacement.

You've been swooped!

There is a procedure...im holding a copy of it in my hand.....it is not an updated pot....it involves welding a small plate on the bottom of the floorboard and mounting an accelerator switch to it....then wiring it into the harnessto bypass the accelerator switch that is internal in the pot

cat update hpk articles do not indicate any updated accerator pot that includes installing an external switch that i can find.

But code 51 does involve replacing the potentiometer or repairing any wiringi issues or abnormalities in the accelerator circuit or pedal assembly.

make sure the pedal is returning completely back when released.
if any wiring is found to be chafed or broken repair the wiring
if all else fails then replace the accelerator potentiometer and set it up according to cat adjustment proceedures.

Note: installing an external switch negates any safety protocols and should not be done in ANY case.

Bluetooth is named after the 10th-century Viking king, Harald Bluetooth, who united warring tribes in Denmark and Norway. In 1997, Jim Kardach from Intel gave the name to the technology because of its ability to unite different communication protocols, just as Harald united various tribes.
