Discussion:
changed regulator now no power

I changed my faulty impco model j regulator to a impco cobra that the local parts store said was the replacement. After starting it up it ran beautifully except it didn't have any power. It couldn't make it up a hill that we drive it over regularly. Its as if i am only pressing the pedal down half way. I noticed the old impco regulator says "w.c..2 lbs" the new one says "w.c..08 lbs" I brought this to the attention of the parts store but they insisted that it was the right part, I even talked to the service manager and he said it was ok.

My question is would this difference cause the problem i'm having? thanks

mrfixit, I checked the governor and the spring was still intact and was holding it wide open. I re installed the original regulator and it gained all of its power back, So either it was a bad regulator or the wrong one.

matt;
We have expierenced this same problem occur with the use of the Impco "EC Cobra" vs the US Impco model J. The problem we found is that we had orfices and other internal parts that are metric is size while the older unit is US Standard spec.

Sounds like you may have a problem with the governor, located under the carb. There is a spring loaded throttle plate, that if the spring breaks causes that problem. You have to take the side cover off the governor to see the spring.
