I'm trying to put together information on chain inspections rules and or the equivalent to the UK thorough examination of lifting equipment in the LOLER and PUWER regulations. I am very keen on USA, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand but would be interested in the other countries

Thanks does the yearly check up have a name that everone refers to it. In the UK it is called a Thorough Examination and is part of LOLER 98 and PUWER 98 chain is only a small part of it
Chain inspection is not limited measurement. Although link length measurement is important so is the wear on the plates. The general condition of the chain must be assessed ie no siezed links, bars must be free of cracks, pins must be checked to ensure no rotating has occurred, no rust corrosion should be evident.
Most service manuals have a section on how to check chains.
In Ontario Canada, we have to certify fork lifts as being capable of handling the rated load yearly (a long winded requirement in our OHSA that basically means every 2000 hours). I have helped develop the criertia used for this.
I have just gone through an exercise and found that Renold.com also have a great brochure to download which contains a host of information and measurements criteria. This alongside FB chain will give you all you need.
Try FBchain.com. They have a very comprehensive website with tons of advice.
